"...flowers descending untouched through the centuries : perhaps the people in olden times felt that their beauty poured some sort of reassuring oil on those sores of anxiety for the state of the universe, which must have beset each generation from the dawn of time, just as they do us. The common white narcissus, the common purple iris. More personal than any legacy, more real, are these flowers that have passed through the hands of humanity from generation to generation, from hand to hand like a torch, a link with the forbears whose eyes never saw a 'New Yorker' rose or a marigold with petals that had been distorted by colchicine."
