May 24, 1985

"If you lived in the Depression, from dollar to dollar (cash!) and the gas & el man came around to collect the $4.80 bill in person while you were boiling the family underwear on the stove (cotton of course) -- on a gas stove in a walk-up (and I mean walk) in the side streets of New Orleans 1933, the gas man was also a depression person -- and let you off (if you promised to bring the $4.80) to the gas & el office next day. This was done."
